Petoskey News-Review, December 2001
Douglas Dean Corey was born March 23, 1938, to William and Effie Corey in Lima Ohio.
He was a 1957 graduate of Harbor Springs High School.
Doug was united in marriage to Clara Evelyn Johnston Corey Dec. 22, 1958, at Harbor Springs Methodist Church.
Sergeant First Class Corey was a U.S. Army careerist of 26 years, with active duty as a heavy equipment operator and instructor and service in the Vietnam War, retiring March 1, 1985. He received the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service. Following retirement, Doug continued to serve his country as an Army civil servant for an additional eight years.
Doug was a Scoutmaster who served the Boy Scouts both in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and in Republic of Germany.
Doug was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2051 in Petoskey and the retired Enlisted Association.
Doug was an avid recreational camping partner with his wife, Clara, and was an eager square dance partner with Clara, and a member of the Montachuset Twirlers Square Dance Club in Leominster, Mass.; had a distinctive laugh, a disarming smile and loved to play the forks!
The Coreys sold their home in Shirley, Mass., in 1998, and became RV "full-timers" on the byways of America. He was a member of the Michigan Grange & Grange Camping Patron.
Although Doug never had prior symptoms of heart disease, he apparently suffered a massive heart attack at an RV park near St. Robert, outside Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and died at the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital on the morning of Dec. 10, 2001, having attained age 63 years.
Doug is survived by his wife, Clara; two sons, Douglas Jr., and his wife Beth, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Robert "Rob" William and his wife, Marcy, of Amesbury, Mass.; a brother, Donald and his wife Melodie, of Harbor Springs; grandson, Robert David Dean Corey; eight nephews; seven nieces; and a host of friends and fellow RV'ers, who will treasure their memories of him.
