Petoskey News-Review, Thursday, April 15, 1999:
Lawrence 'Larry' VanLiew, 61, of Springvale Township, died April 13, 1999, at Northern Michigan Hospital.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Petoskey. The Rev. Sherry McGuffin will officiate and burial will be in Curtis Cemetery.
Larry was born Dec. 27, 1927, in Petoskey, son of Lawrence and Rachel (Haley) VanLiew. He grew up and attended school in Petoskey, then attended high school in Battle Creek where he graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1956.
On July 28, 1984, Larry married Pamela Kruth in Hemlock, Mich.
He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1956, where he served as a gunnery sergeant. He was stationed in California and Japan. Larry was a Vietnam veteran and retired from the Marine Corps in 1976.
After his retirement, he moved back to Petoskey where he worked for Barnum Brothers. He also managed several apartment complexes, drove for Mayflower Moving Co., and most recently, worked as a sales associate at Wal-Mart.
Larry was a member and on the church council at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, member of V.F.W., and Marine Corps Air Traffic Control Association.
He loved to fish and go mushrooming, and enjoyed telling off-color jokes. He also umpired Little League at the waterfront.
Larry is survived by his wife, Pam; four stepchildren, Debra Jacobs of East Jordan, Daniel Jacobs of Tiffin, Ohio, Dennis Jacobs of Tiffin, Ohio, Diana Smith of Belgium, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Daniel L. VanLiew and Ralph VanLiew and his wife, Eldy, all of Petoskey; two sisters, Marquita Fochtman and husband, Carl, of Petoskey, Velma J. Aurand of Battle Creek; father, Lawrence A. VanLiew, of Petoskey. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rachel, and brother, James VanLiew.
Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at Stone Funeral Home, Petoskey. Memorial contributions may be made to Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.
