Patrick Henry Farley was one of the five children born to Lawrence and Mary (Goff) Farley. In Ireland, the family name was spelled Farrelly.

During the Civil War, Pat enlisted in 1863 and served in the quartermaster's department at St. Louis for seven months.

In 1871, Patrick was married to Catherine Maher at Freeport, Illinois. They were the parents of ten children. Patrick visited Dakota Territory in 1870 and moved there permanently in 1876. He succeeded in filing on a homestead adjacent to the site of Beresford, SD in 1878.

When the surveyor laid out the town of Beresford, Patrick helped carry the chain.

Patrick was one of the twenty-one people who donated money for the purchase of the land to form St. John Cemetery, where Patrick and his wife and two of their children were later buried.

Patrick was buried at St. John Cemetery in Union County, South Dakota.
